No matter where you go in the known universe, there is design-by-committee. It has become a pecking order of disaster for the society that used to pride itself on being a mover and shaker and that allowed its mavericks and dreamers to innovate their way to success. In a business climate fueled by fear and the “Peter Principle,” as it is today, a decision not made is a tragedy averted. So, decision by committee provides a safe and often anonymous process for finger-pointing down the line… inevitably leading to the creative, of course.

I ran across this Big Think interview with Jason Fried of 37signals regarding why the modern workplace is designed to not let you get any work done. I totally agree with his outlook on the situation… so true.

The worst thing you could ever do to a designer, developer, writer, creative, employee or anyone in fact, is to interrupt them while they’re in the zone. When you interrupt people at work, it’s equivalent to walking up to the stage while a band is performing and asking the lead singer, “how’s it going?”. Would you really expect Mick Jagger to stop the concert and have a conversation or answer a question like that? How do you feel the audience, who paid good money for the show, would feel about you interrupting the concert?

It usually takes me anywhere from 10-15 minutes to truly get in the zone. Once I’m in that zone, I can stay there for hours… I’m talking 4-18 hours straight. Yes, I have to eat and visit the restroom on occasion, but for the most part, my mind is focused on the problem and task at hand for that duration. If I’m interrupted 4 times every hour, and it takes me 10 minutes, conservatively, to get back in the zone after each of those interruptions, I only have 20 minutes of real time in that hour to produce results. Really it’s more like 10-15 minutes of real time, because don’t forget that you have to answer the question or hold an irrelevant conversation before you can get back into your zone. Add that up over the course of a day and you can see how many hours are wasted.

Interruption wastes people’s time. It wastes your customer’s time and money, and it decreases the quality of the end-product, project, venture or whatever it is that you’re working on. It’s a lose/lose situation for everyone involved, so don’t do it. The people and companies that are successful are those that get things done, and you can’t get things done if you’re constantly interrupted.

Australia has been releasing some great music the past couple of years. The video for the Miami Horror single, “Sometimes”, is a perfect example.

Intriguing lyrics, beautiful tropical scenes and a sophisticated vision help us remember that there is still beauty and love in the world amidst all the death and destruction. We may be adults on earth, but we’re still children when it comes to the universe and there is still much to learn and discover.

Brace yourself. Apple is about to change its logo — again. The new corporate mark, set to roll out this summer, will be the tenth official logo for Apple in the last 13 years.

Cupertino, CA — Brace yourself. Apple is about to change its logo — again. The new corporate mark, set to roll out this summer, will be the tenth official logo for Apple in the last 13 years. “Jony knocked this one out of the park,” said one executive, on condition of anonymity. “You can barely notice the damn thing anymore.”

Latest iMac shows off the new apple-less Apple logo:

Jony Ive, apparently searching for things to do now that iPad and iPhone 4 have launched, presented his new design at Apple’s quarterly Minimization Meeting last week In the meeting, Jony presented a minimal one-paragraph argument for making the change. “In the mobile age, we need to shed, not add. We’ve shed 24% of the iPhone’s bulk, we’ve shed Flash, and we will now shed the bulk of our logo. The leaf says all we need to say.”

A new brand campaign will celebrate the new logo:

“The old logo was way too complicated,” explains a graphic artist inside Apple. “Leaf, apple … apple, leaf — the eye never knew where to focus. The solution is pure Apple. Or, I should say, pure leaf.” A new theme line, a minimized version of the old Think different line — Think dif™ — will accompany the new logo at launch. A pure brand campaign featuring the new logo is slated to run in prime outdoor media.

If all goes well, it will have minimal impact on Apple’s business.

Ok, so this is not true at all and soon realized it was a joke…

Big Skillet? Funny Name. What’s the Deal?

Yes, people normally smirk and laugh a little when they hear the name “Big Skillet” and rightfully so. Big Skillet was born out of the phrase “home skillet”, but was altered after hearing a line recited in an old 70′s movie, “Tell Big Skillet I said hi!” “Skillet” was soon adopted as nickname of choice by family and friends.

I admit, Big Skillet is a funny name, but I bet you never forget it!
